Berkey Sight Glass Spigots (How They Work + Installation Guide)

By Jeff Wise Published: March 10, 2020 Updated: April 29, 2026

What are Berkey sight glass spigots and how do they work?

Berkey sight glass spigots are add-on accessories that allow you to see the water level inside the lower chamber of your stainless steel Berkey system. They install easily through the spigot hole and provide a quick, visual way to monitor filtered water without opening the unit.

Berkey sight glass spigots are specifically designed for stainless steel systems like the Travel, Big, Royal, Imperial, and Crown Berkey.

They allow instant reading of water level in the lower chamber—no more guessing or lifting the lid.

You don't need this with the Berkey Light because you can already see through the shatter-resistant, BPA-free copolyester body.

Three Different Sizes of Berkey Sight Glass Spigots

There are three different sizes of Berkey sight glass spigots, depending on your system size:

  • 7.5 Inch – For the Travel and Big Berkey
  • 10 Inch – For the Royal and Imperial Berkey
  • 13 Inch – For the Crown Berkey

Choosing the correct size ensures accurate water level readings and proper fit.

How to Install a Berkey Sight Glass Spigot

Installing a Berkey sight glass spigot is quick and requires no tools.

Wash hands and the spigot with mild dish soap before starting. Rinse thoroughly.

Place one black rubber washer over the threads of the spigot. Insert the threaded stem through the hole in the lower chamber.

Place the second washer on the inside and secure with the spigot nut. Tighten by hand only.

Tip: Hold the nut in place and rotate the spigot until tight, then align the sight glass upward.

For the 13" model, install the included brace for added stability.

A small piece of Velcro is included—attach it to secure the sight glass in place.

Why Many Users Upgrade to Stainless Steel Spigots

Many Berkey users choose to upgrade to stainless steel spigots for improved durability, longevity, and a cleaner look.

Compared to standard spigots, stainless steel options are more resistant to wear and provide a premium feel that matches your system.

If you're already upgrading your setup, it’s a small change that can make a big difference in long-term use.

Cleaning Instructions for Berkey Sight Glass Spigots
