Berkey Filter Cleaning: How to Extend the Life of Your Black Berkey Elements
Berkey filter cleaning keeps flow up and taste consistent. Shop systems: Berkey water filters.
Official replacements now: Phoenix filters. Older Black elements use the same scrub-and-prime routine.

Why Clean the Elements
Sediment and minerals cake the outside and slow gravity flow. Cleaning the shell restores flow. Healthy eating is separate: family eating.
Empty and dry the lower chamber if water sits for days. That is housekeeping, not a pesticide claim.

Signs It’s Time
Slow drip. Off taste or smell from a dirty chamber. Visible scale on the element. Tap-water chemical background: U.S. tap-water contaminants.
How to Clean
- Take the elements out.
- Scrub the outside with a Scotch-Brite pad under cold tap water. No soap.
- Rinse. Re-prime. Reinstall snug, not crushed.
Make Them Last
Very cloudy tap can be left to settle first. Keep the unit out of hot sun. Replace washers if they leak.
Slow Flow
Clean, re-prime, check washers. High-mineral tap water clogs faster.
How Often
Every two to three months for most city-tap homes, sooner if flow drops.
Mistakes
- Soap or detergent
- Steel wool
- Grinding too hard
- Reassembling soaking wet if you store it unused
