Is Lemon Water Good For You?
Is lemon water good for you? Oftentimes when you visit a restaurant and order water, they’ll ask if you’d like lemon in it.
You may be wondering, what is the purpose or benefit of drinking water with lemon?
While this simple addition to your water may not make a significant nutritional difference in your diet, it can still be worthwhile.

What is Lemon Water?
Lemon water is simply adding lemon juice to your regular drinking water.
The amount depends on personal taste.
Some people add it for flavor. Others prefer it in the morning for Vitamin C.
Some drink it cold and others drink it warm.
Some squeeze the juice into the glass. Others add slices, rind and all.
It can also be mixed with honey, mint, or turmeric.
The Benefit of Drinking Lemon Water
Lemon is a source of Vitamin C. It also contains flavonoids and antioxidants.
Flavonoids have been studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
The flavonoid quercetin is found in lemons and other citrus foods.
Antioxidants help protect cells from damage and are often discussed in connection with heart health and other long-term conditions.
Some research also looks at lemon and citrate in relation to kidney stones.
Lemons are not a complete source of every mineral, but they are useful for the reasons above.
- Rich in Vitamin C
- Contains antioxidants
- Flavonoids in lemons have been studied for anti-inflammatory effects
- May be part of a diet aimed at heart and metabolic health
- Citrate is sometimes discussed in kidney-stone prevention
Advantages Of Honey and Lemon Water
Our family also uses warm lemon and honey water when someone has a sore throat.
We warm water on the stove, add lemon and honey to a mug, and pour the warm water over it.
It is soothing. It is not a substitute for medical care if someone is truly sick.
When You May Want to Skip Restaurant Lemon Water
Restaurant lemon wedges often sit in a shared bowl and get handled by several people. If that bothers you, skip the lemon when you eat out.
Restaurant water is usually municipal tap water. Taste varies. At home you control the lemon and can use filtered Berkey water.
