Our family has always been into having a healthy kitchen. One aspect of that for us has been finding the best non-toxic cookware.
You can have the most delicious, organic and healthy foods, but if you're cooking with toxic cookware it may leach into your food.
Then all of a sudden your family is consuming toxic chemicals on a daily basis.
Chemicals Found in Toxic Cookware
The biggest dangers everyday cookware pose are when it comes to non-stick coatings.
Teflon coating is responsible for much of the perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) found in homes across America.
According to Dr. Group with Global Healing, “Federal regulators linked the chemical to birth defects and cancer, and these regulators also accused DuPont of hiding these hazard reports for decades.”
That doesn't just apply to PFOA, though. This also includes PFAS and PTFE.
Then you get into aluminum cookware, colored enamel pans, and even some certain ceramic non-stick cookware types. All of these have the potential to unleash toxins.
Deceptive Cookware Claims
In this excellent article found on In On Around, Catherine explains that some companies use deceptive wording to make you think their cookware is healthy, but in reality they are not.
Catherine's list of deceptive labels includes:
- Non-toxic coating
- 100% toxin-free
- Ethically manufactured
None of these labels mean the cookware is actually safe and healthy. She goes on to say, "These claims are not regulated."
Actually, Jenna Johnson from NonToxic Mama Bear says, "What if I told you there is no such thing as nontoxic cookware? As I’ve said prior, it's impossible to avoid all chemicals completely. However with cookware, we can make choices to purchase and utilize cleaner options."
Healthy Non-Toxic Cookware To Use in 2024
While it can be challenging to find a good, healthy cookware, there are several options we recommend.
Stainless steel is a good option, but make sure there's no ceramic enamel or coatings. The best option for stainless steel is the 304 series.
Another healthy option is Cast Iron cookware. Try to find uncoated cast iron, though, and avoid enameled options. Enameled cast iron can be contaminated with lead and cadmium, which can be harmful.
Finally, glass is a safe and healthy option for cooking. Be sure to stay away from tinted or colored glass, though.
Here Are The Best Non-Toxic Cookware Options We Recommend
- All-Clad Stainless Steel Cookware
- Pyrex Glass Baking Dishes
- Lodge Cast Iron Skillets
- TeamFar Stainless Steel Bakeware
