Water Filtration System That Really Works

By Jeff Wise Published: March 10, 2020 Updated: August 29, 2026

Water Filtration System

I told someone I run a water-filter shop and they laughed. A lot of people have tried this category and quit. I still write because our family drinks city tap water through a Berkey every day. Other rooms and trips: Berkey in more than one setting.

I do not sell “whatever is in the warehouse.” We picked gravity carbon after cheap pitchers and a stretch looking at reverse osmosis. The rest of this post is that comparison and how the system actually sits on a counter.

Cheap Pitchers vs RO vs Gravity

Refrigerator and pitcher filters are easy. The box often talks about taste. The fine print is usually a short chemical list. After a few months the cartridge is due again and the chlorine smell creeps back.

Reverse osmosis is the opposite extreme. A membrane under pressure strips most dissolved solids. That includes minerals you might want to keep. RO also sends unused water down the drain and needs a place under the sink plus a tank. For some houses that is the right tool. For ours it was more plumbing than we wanted.

A Berkey sits on the counter. You prime the elements, pour municipally treated tap water in the top chamber, and wait. Gravity does the work. Published tests cover chlorine, many metals, PFAS compounds, pesticides, and other organics. Minerals stay in. It is not a clone of every RO ion. It is the no-plumber option for city tap water. Shop: Berkey systems.

Setup and Upkeep

First afternoon: wash the chambers, prime each element until water beads through, seat the washers, tighten the wing nuts snug. Ten minutes of assembly plus prime time. When flow slows, scrub the outside of the elements under cold tap water — no soap — and prime again.

Official replacements are the Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition elements. A pair lasts thousands of gallons in a typical kitchen. That is the cost story versus a pitcher you restock four times a year.

Why We Keep One

  • Chlorine taste is gone on the first full run
  • Metals and PFAS reduction with lab PDFs on the product pages
  • No electricity, so stored tap water still moves through during an outage
  • Same unit on a hotel counter if the room tap is city water
  • Dorm and RV kitchen when the tap is municipal

Power outages are about the tap you already stored, not a new water source. Hotel and RV use is the same tap-water job in a smaller room.

If you want fluoride lower than the city dose, add PF-2s on a full-size system. The Go Berkey is too short for those.
