Keeping a filtered water system clean is simple maintenance: better taste, better flow, and longer filter life.

Why Home Water Filters Get Used

How To Maintain a Home Water Filtering System
Replace cartridges on the maker’s schedule. Many pitcher or under-sink cartridges last 6 to 12 months. Berkey elements are rated in gallons and can last much longer. Official replacements are the Phoenix filters.
Wash housings and chambers with mild soap and warm water. Mineral film and sediment slow flow and can make water taste stale.
Do not run bleach through Berkey elements unless the manufacturer instructions say to. Clean the stainless chambers only with soap or vinegar, then rinse well.
Why Cleaning Is Recommended
Clogged media means slower flow and weaker taste-and-odor reduction.
Standing water in a lower chamber can develop a musty film. Regular washing prevents that.
Clean systems last longer and need fewer surprise replacements.
Other Maintenance
Chemical contaminants such as heavy metals, PFOA, and microplastics are why many families filter tap water.
A drinking-water filter does not treat the whole-house plumbing line. Coffee makers and dishwashers still see unfiltered line water unless you have a separate system.
Other Cleaning Tips
- Wash chambers on a schedule so they do not smell stale.
- Check for leaks at the spigot and wingnuts.
- Watch flow rate — a sudden slowdown often means elements need scrubbing or replacement.
- Discard the first batch after cleaning or re-priming.
How Often Should You Clean?
Wash Berkey chambers every couple of months, or sooner if water sits for days. Scrub elements every few months if flow slows. Replace them at the rated gallon life or if taste returns.
What Happens If You Don’t Clean?
Flow drops. Taste and smell can return. The lower chamber can get musty. That is a maintenance issue, not a reason to treat illness at home. See a doctor if someone is sick.

Elements last thousands of gallons. Testing includes trihalomethanes, pharmaceuticals, and metals.

How To Clean Berkey Filters
Every couple of months, take the system apart.
Wash the stainless chambers with warm, soapy water.
Do not use soap on the filter elements.
Rinse the elements under cool water and gently scrub the outside with a Scotch-Brite pad. That refreshes the surface.
Re-prime with the blue Prime Rite, then reassemble.
