Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” is a type of gas drilling where a mixture of chemicals, water and sand are injected into the ground in which veins open up to release natural gas.
These gases and fracking chemicals have been shown to produce many water contamination symptoms. This would include the release of lead and benzene among other toxic chemicals.
New Study Confirms Water Contamination From Fracking Chemicals
Pennsylvania is at the forefront of this subject again. A new study was released showing fracking is very possibly causing contaminated local drinking water.
The natural gas companies still fight back and say there’s no way fracking deep in the ground can cause contamination on the surface.
However, a new study published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says:
…the presence of these fluids suggests conductive pathways and specific geostructural and/or hydrodynamic regimes in northeastern Pennsylvania that are at increased risk for contamination of shallow drinking water resources, particularly by fugitive gases, because of natural hydraulic connections to deeper formations.
They took 426 shallow groundwater samples and found matches with brine found in rock more than one mile deep.
This would suggest paths that would let gas or water flow up after drilling. While the flows weren’t linked to fracking, the study found natural routes for seepage into wells or streams.
Prof. Avner Vengosh whose group conducted this study out of Duke University says, “The fact that it’s a mile or two miles apart doesn’t mean that there’s separation.”
This study didn’t necessarily prove that the toxic fluid traveled up to the drinking water but it does say there is an increased risk of contamination.
What Do We Do About These Possible Water Contamination Symptoms?
The best thing you can do is protect yourself by only drinking purified water. Your local city water doesn’t eliminate many of these toxic chemicals even though they dump chlorine in to supposedly cleanse everything.
People with wells are out of luck too.
You could buy spring water but then you have to consider the cost plus the possibility of BPA leaching into the water causing all sorts of problems.
The Black Berkey water purification element does reduce or eliminate many of these toxic chemicals and is your best bet other than having the practice of fracking banned.
I wrote earlier about benzene and lead and those are eliminated and or reduced to below detectable levels. Here is a small list.
Alachlor, Atrazine, Benzene, Carbofuran, Carbon Tetrachloride, Chlorine, Chlorobenzene, Chloroform, 2,4-D, DBCP, p-Dichlorobenzene, o-Dichlorobenzene, 1, 1-Dichloroethane, 1, 2-Dichloroethane, 1, 1-Dichloroethylene, cis-1, 2-Dichloroethylene, Trans-1,2-Dichloroethylene, 1, 2-Dichloropropane, cis-l,3-Dichloropropylene, Dinoseb, Endrin, Ethylbenzene, Ethylene Dibromide (EDB), Heptachlor, Heptachlor Epoxide,Hexachlorobutodiene, Hexachlorocyclopentadiene, Lindane, Methoxychlor, MTBE, Pentachlorophenol, Simazine, Styrene, 1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane,Tetrachloroethylene, Toluene, 2,4,5-TP (Silvex), 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, Trichloroethylene, o-Xylene, m-Xylene,p-Xylene.
Those are all eliminated. Here’s a list of toxins reduced to 95%.
Lead, mercury, aluminum, cadmium, chormium and copper.
Don’t sit there and let these nasty fracking chemicals produce water contamination. See what you can do in your community to prevent this and make sure you get the proper filters to give you clean water.
